17 August North Yorkshire - Danby,Whitby and Sandsend

Friday 17 August

Today we went to Whitby and Sandsend in North Yorkshire. We went there to see where Mum and Grandma used to spend a lot of time. Our Grandma grew up in the area and had a family home there where Mum used to go on weekends with her cousins.

On the way to Whitby we stopped at a small village called Danby and had morning tea. This is the village where our great grandparents are buried. We had some milkshakes, hot chocolates, cappuccinos and scones and shortbread - delicious. We found the church and cemetery where Mum's grandparents are buried and we visited their graves.

The countryside was really beautiful, lots of green hills divided by old stone walls.

Next we went to Whitby. Whitby is a fishing and shipping port where Captain James Cook set sail from in the Endeavour before he discovered Australia. The Endeavour was made in Whitby and Captain James Cook was born and grew up nearby in Marton in the North Yorkshire area. We watched a replica of the Endeavour go out and come back into the harbour.

Whitby also has the best fudge shop in the world says Mum so of course, we had to try some. There were a few good lollie shops too. On top of one of the heads at Whitby is a really old abbey and a church and cemetery where the vampire Dracula is said to have either been buried or took refuge in.

We also saw a couple of pirate graves from the 1600's. They had a skull and cross bones on them.

We had to walk up 199 steps to get to the church.

We had fish and chips for lunch in Whitby and then went to nearby Sandsend.

Mum used to spend her weekends with Grandma, her uncle and cousins here in Sandsend and Mum showed us the house in which she used to stay. It had been in Grandma's family for a long time. We had a nice look around Sandsend and then drove back to Aunty Sharon's.

Sharon had a lovely baked dinner ready for us when we got back. We had a great day. Mum said she loved taking us to the places she loved when she lived here.

See you later, Elodie, Holly and Erin. :)

  1. Well, my darlings - this blog makes me cry - with happiness! I am so touched that you went to all the places that are so special to me (and your Mum), including the grave of my parents, although you all looked So cold! I took a picture there once and it had a ghost in the background - honestly!!
I guess the cafe in Danby was the one at the bottom of the street where I was born - did you see my first home, I wonder? It was lovely to see you outside Monzie in Sandsend and in Whitby and Danby - I hope you liked it all x
Whitby is an amazing place, and when I was a schoolgirl, I worked in the holidays in a cafe called The Smugglers Cafe - and yes, Dracula is buried up at St Hildas Church, in a lead-lined coffin!!!! A very special blog. xxxx

  2. and I forgot to say that when I was at school in Robin Hoods Bay, which is just down from Whitby, I wrote an History essay on that statue, but I thought it was Lord Nelson, not Captain Cook, so I didn't pass that exam!!! hahaha !

  3. Hi Erin,

We were really interested to hear about your family history becuase we are learning about family history. Yesterday we all did an oral presentation about our own family history. So, when we read your blog today it was like you knew and did your own presentation like us. We also learnt how to speak spanish yesterday because we have been learning all about different families around the world.

We like the pictures of the animals. We have been learning about Australian animals, but it looks like you have been learning about farm animals!

We thought that the photo of you in the mirrors was funny. It looks like a billion Erins!!!!!!!

    love 1J and Mrs Johns
