21/22 August England to Austria Via Scotland and Germany

21/22 August England to Austria Via Scotland and Germany

We left Sharon's house in Consett in England in the late afternoon on the 21 August and drove up the english east coast then into Scotland to Edinburgh. It was a great drive along the coast with great views and beautiful countryside. We saw a lot of the North Sea to the east and little villages and a nuclear power station we think.

We stayed at a Premier Inn in Edinburgh. We have stayed at these a few times previously and they are always roomy, clean and comfortable. We had a big dinner in the restaurant at the Inn.

We had a big sleep and up at about 8am and had a big breaky in the restaurant and then packed our bags again and then we drove to the airport. We checked in, hung around till lunch time and then flew Easyjet to Munich in Germany. At the airport we picked up our hire car, or should we say van (it is a 9 seater Ford Transit van), and then set off from the airport to Salzburg where we are staying for a couple of days. But there was a big traffic jam on the autostrada and we sat in traffic for about 3 hours. (We had fun walking around inside the van whilst stuck in the traffic).

We saw a traffic sign (one of many that we were to see) that seemed to make us feel at home.

Ausfahrt means exit in German (Deutsche).

Finally we got moving and drove the couple of hours down the autostrada to Salzburg. Some cars passed us at we reckon about 200km per hour. Dad was being careful sitting on 130, as he was back again "on the wrong side of the road" after driving in the UK for the last few weeks. We had dinner along the way and bought a toll sticker for driving on toll roads Austria at a service station.

We arrived in Salzburg late at night and found our hotel with some good navigation in town by mum and dad. We are staying at the Hotel Turnerwirt, a traditional austrian guest house in Salzburg. We have adjoining inter-connected rooms with mum and dad. It was hot in Salzburg when we arrived, and there was a big thunderstorm in the night.

Tomorrow and the next day we are going exploring in Salzburg.

  1. Hello, my darling girls, wow, what a life you are having !! Do you think you will remember most of it?..I think you will. When you were driving from Newcastle to Edinburgh up the coast, you would have gone through a town called Berwick upon Tweed, which is on the border of England and Scotland, and that is where Auntie Veronica, Auntie Susy and I used to go to school - oh and your Auntie Kate!!! and Auntie Veronicas lovely mother used to have a Guest House there, too. I did laugh at the signs you saw in Germany - did it remind you of your brother?!! xxxxx safe travelling xxx
