27 August - Zell Am See

27 August - Zell A See

It was a beautiful day after the freezing cold and rain of the day before. It got to 25 degrees about lunch time and blue skies with some clouds on top of the mountains.

We learnt the German name "Zell am See" means "Cell by the lake". We learnt that Austrians speak German (Deutsche). Todd speaks German and that has helped get us around in Austria particularly with menus.

We had a big breaky and headed out just down the road to the cable car which took us to the top of the mountain. The name of the mountain is the Schmittenhohe at 2000 metres. It provides 360 degree views of all the mountains and towns and valleys around.

We had fun riding up in the Porsche cable car and then at the top we explored the top of the mountain and walked to nearby lookouts and cafes. The views were incredible. We could see many snow capped mountains (20 at greater than 3000m) and beautiful lakes and villages. There were ski resorts with lifts and cable cars scattered all around.

We had a fabulous lunch at a cliff top cafe. We had goulash soup, austrian sausages, and austrian meat and potato dish, and tyrolean gostel. Mum, dad, Nathan and Todd had austrian beers. We all had apple strudel and cream and custard after. Wow that was good.

After exploring for about 2 hours we came down on the cable car.

Nathan and Todd went bike riding around the lake and they had a swim. Mum, dad and us girls went into town and walked through the beautiful streets and along the lake side. It was a great afternoon. We had gelati and bought some souvenirs. We bought some food for dinner and went back home about 6pm. We all arrived home at the same time.

We sat on our verandah and soaked up the last of the sun and the fabulous views for a while.

Mum cooked up a big dinner of chicken and steak and vegies. Dad, Nathan and Todd had some more austrian beers and mum a red wine. We talked about our last few days and how wonderful Zell Am See and Austria generally are. Dad says it is almost his favourite place, it is like a cross between Annecy and Queenstown in New Zealand. (Our friends from Inverell, Larry and Coral, Renee and Tara and Ben are coming to Austria for a winter Xmas this year - they will be blown away by the country we are sure).

We watched a movie and then off to bed after a little bit of packing. Todd leaves on the train tomorrow for Frankfurt in Germany to catch a plane back to Australia. The rest of us are driving to Venice in Italy tomorrow. It is a 4 hour drive and we'll be there for 2 days. We are excited about our next little adventure.

Cheers, The Creber Girls xxx
