Hi All
13 July - Warm and sunny with some cloud - Stage 12 TDF Start and Cadel
Today we all (including Ben and Lavina) went to Saint Jean Du Maurienne to watch the TDF start of stage 12.
We left Annecy early and it took about 1 hour 20 minutes to drive there. Some of the roads were blocked when we got there but we managed to find a way in to the town. We parked and walked up to the start area where the town was packed with people and music was playing. We watched the "caravan" roll through and got some freebies as they chucked things into the crowd.
We then walked down to where the team buses are and all the cyclists get out and warm up and get ready. We stood across from BMC bus waiting for Cadel and we saw him a few times and cheered for him very loudly. Although he lost time yesterday and admitted he isn't up to the standard he wanted this year compared to last, he was quoted as saying he won't give up trying to win. We think he can still do it. He waved at us and his team all hovered around. The media converged on him.
All the cyclists from all the teams had to ride past us up to the sign on and then ride back, so we saw all of the cyclists, unbelievably only an arms length away. It was very exciting. Big cheers for the aussie Green Edge team riders and aussies Michael Rogers and Richie Porte from Sky. We had a great time and dad and Ben couldn't believe we got so close to the cyclists.
Channel 10 came over and interviewed us three girls for the news. We assume we made it onto Sports Tonight or the Ten evening news.
Then we rushed down to the nearby street to see the race start and the cyclists ride through. We had a great spot with not many people there. Cadel was one of the last to ride through and he smiled at us as we waved the aussie flag and wished him all the best.
We had drinks in a cafe and then we drove back to Annecy. We had a late lunch at our apartment then walked down to town and walked around beautiful Annecy. It was a perfect day, warm and sunny and the town was beautiful. Canals and bridges and old medieval buildings in the old town and a lovely clear clean lake with the massive mountains of the Alps all around. We saw some monster trout and a yabbie. We explored a little, especially in the old town and around the lake edge, and will come back tomorrow for a lake cruise and more exploring includng the castle.
We checked out bike hire also because we are going to ride around the lake. It is rated one of the top 5 recreational bike rides in the world. The bike path goes along an old rail line and through some old rail tunnels.
We went home and had rissotto and were kept awake by the fireworks going off for about an hour around the lake. They were obviously practicing for tomorrow nights Bastille Day celebrations.
Below are 3 pics at the TDF start and the rest are of Annecy. They are a bit out of order. Sorry.
