Last day in Paris for now - 9/7/12

It was sunny today and about 23 degrees.

We had a sleep in and then at 10am jumped on the Metro to the Flea Markets, the Marché aux Puces St-Ouen de Clignancourt. These markets are Paris's most famous flea market. It is a grouping of more than a dozen flea markets -- a complex of 2,500 to 3,000 open stalls and shops on the northern edge of the city, selling everything from antiques to junk, from new to vintage clothing, heaps of shoes and bags too. Elodie bought some Converse shoes and a phone cover. Erin bought some nice black slip on dress shoes. Holly bought a phone cover. Dad bought some socks. We also bought some souvenirs. It was a great place to shop and look around and see the many different types of people. We had some crepes there and mum and dad had their best cappuccino yet.

We got the Metro back and took it easy in the arvo (inc watching a little of the TDF TT on TV in French) and then had dinner (chicken and veg fyi Paige) at home.

We saw and heard an air force fly past over Paris. That was loud. The French are preparing for Bastille Day on 14 July. (The Internet tells us that Bastille Day is the French national holiday, commemorating the storming of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July 1789 and marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille was a prison and a symbol of the absolute and arbitrary power of King Louis the 16th's Ancient Regime. By capturing this symbol, the people signalled the end of absolute monarchy, the birth of the sovereign Nation, and, eventually, the creation of the First Republic, in 1792).

After dinner we walked up to the “Love Lock”(Ponte Des Arts) bridge and placed two padlocks on the bridge. One for Mum and Dad and one for us. We through our keys into the Seine. There must be few keys down there. We had a lovely sunset walk along the Seine and took some sunset photos of the Louvre and the river.

Earlier we also went and checked out Hertz for our car hire tomorrow. It is right across the road under the Louvre.

We are off to Annecy tomorrow morning, a 6 hour drive through the Burgundy region of France to the Alps. We are in Annecy for a week. We plan to watch the TDF in the Alpson 11, 12 and 13 July. We hope to swim in Lake Annecy. Normal day time temp there is around 28-30 degrees. We are back in Paris the following week for the last two stages of the TDF and more Disneyland. Yey!

We are meeting our friends Ben and Lavina in Annecy.

We have a TDF plan. Here is our TDF strategy. See if you can spot us on TV during one of the stages. We want dad to do a Borat impression in green and gold. Maybe we’ll just wear our Aussie shirts and hats.

Stage 10 - 11 July Macon to Bellegard de Valserine. Head for Culoz and walk as far up Col du Grande Columbier as possible. (Some say Columbier is the nastiest mountain in France for bike riders). We reckon we’ll get 5 to 10 km up the mountain walking.

Stage 11 - 12 July Albertville to les Toussuire-Les Sybelles. Drive to Saint Jean De Maurienne and either watch through the town or walk 5km up toward Les Toussuire-LS.

Stage 12 – 13 July Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Annonay Davézieux. Either watch start at Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne or drive toward Pontcharra and walk as far as possible up Col du Granier.
