Pisa+Elodie

A big day at Pisa!

On the 11th of June we went to Pisa. The Leaning Tower of Pisa dates back to about 900 years ago. It was built for a place of worship. In 1174 they started constructing the tower but about 1 year later they realised that the ground underneath the tower was sinking and the tower started leaning. They had to stop construction as war was beginning. They built the tower over the next 140 years in two more stages, each time trying to rectify the tilt. The upper stages were built vertical to try and compensate for the tilt. This explains why the top has less of a tilt than the bottom.

Fact File

The height of the tower is 58m.

The angle of the lean is 4 degrees (even though it seems much more than that)

Galileo did experiments about the law of gravity from the tower.

The day was really fun. We took pictures, went shopping at the markets, had European McDonalds and even climbed the Leaning Tower of Pisa!!!

The best part of the day was climbing the tower because it was really awesome and cool.

This is Mum and I at the top of the tower.

  2. Ciao, girls! Your holiday looks wonderful, and just think, it's going to go on for such a long time! You have so much to see and do, and it would be easy to get places and events muddled up, so it's a great idea to do this blog - fun for us, and a good way to remember a fabulous time later on. Keep those blog posts coming, and don't forget to tell us what you eat, especially the ice cream (have a coffee one for me!). Love to you all. Auntie Veronica xx

  3. Hi Elodie,
The class and I have been enjoying your blog. We wondered whether you could feel the lean of the tower as you walked up the stairs. The kids want to know what you can eat in a European McDonalds and whether you’ve been eating lots of pizzas. Keep us posted on what you see in Florence.
